General KAC Questions


What is the KAC Program?
The KAC is a web-based program with multiple levels of assessments populated with a payroll body of knowledge. KAC assessments can be used to assess your payroll knowledge, as a team skill assessment, to provide practice for the CPP and FPC exams, or to prescreen job applicants about their payroll knowledge.

KAC Registration
How do I register if I have an APA ID?
1.Tell us who you are.
Use your APA ID and password to access Your KAC Account. If you are taking an assessment that your manager purchased for you, he or she will give you a Group ID to use, as well.
2. Purchase assessment(s).

  • Once you have logged in, a Purchase Now button will display in 'Your KAC Account' box. You can pay for one or more assessments to take now or later. If you purchase more than four assessments for yourself, or for a group of people, you’ll automatically receive a discount.
  • You will be asked for credit card information to purchase a KAC assessment(s). Your information is private and fully secure in transmission.
  • If someone purchased an assessment for you or if you made a purchase on a previous visit to the site, it will be noted in Your KAC Account after you log in.
    3. Select an assessment.
  • From the list of assessments to the left (located on the home page), click on one title and begin the assessment.

    How do I register if I do not have an APA ID?
    If you do not have an APA ID…
    1.Tell us who you are.
    You don’t have to be an APA member to use the KAC, but you will need to register. You will designate an ID (your e-mail address) and password as you register. Remember, your e-mail address is where your results will be sent. If you share an e-mail address, you might consider obtaining a free e-mail account at yahoo.com or hotmail.com. If you are taking an assessment that someone else, such as your boss, purchased for you, please register first. When your KAC Account is displayed, use your personal ID and password, as well as the Group ID that you received from the person who purchased your assessment.
    2. Purchase assessment(s).

  • Once you have logged in, a Purchase Now button will display in 'Your KAC Account' box. You can pay for one or more assessments to take now or later. If you purchase more than four assessments for yourself or for a group of people, you’ll get a discount.
  • You will be asked for credit card information to purchase a KAC assessment(s). Your information is private and fully secure in transmission.
  • If someone purchased an assessment for you or if you made a purchase on a previous visit to the site, it will be noted in Your KAC Account.
    3. Select an assessment.
  • From the list of assessments to the left (located on the home page), click on one title and begin the assessment.

    What if I lose my KAC Group ID number?
    You can obtain your Group ID number from the person who originally provided it to you.

    You can obtain your APA ID by calling APA Membership at 210-224-6406 or sending an e-mail to [email protected].

    What if I lose my KAC password?
    If you lose your KAC password, click on ‘I forgot my password’ in the ‘Your KAC Account’ box.

    How do I change my e-mail address that results are sent to?
    You can change the e-mail address that your results are sent to by clicking on the ‘Edit my profile’ in the ‘Your KAC Account’ box. This will change your e-mail address for both the KAC and the American Payroll Association Web-site Members Only section.

    Group Purchases
    How do I purchase a group of KAC assessments for my work group?
    If you are a manager purchasing assessments for several people…
    1. Tell us who you are.
    You don’t have to be an APA member to use the KAC, but you will need to register. You will designate an ID (your e-mail address) and password as you register. Remember, your e-mail address is where your group results will be sent. (As the manager purchasing a group of assessments, you will receive a copy of each individuals result via e-mail.) If you share an e-mail address, you might consider obtaining a free e-mail account at yahoo.com or hotmail.com.
    2. Purchase assessment(s).

  • Once you have logged in, you may purchase a block of KAC assessments for a group of people at a discount. You will be assigned a special, KAC-generated Group ID when you purchase a block of KAC assessments. Use the Purchase Now button in Your KAC Account. Then, individuals in your group will be able to select any assessment title with the special Group ID you provide them.
  • You will be asked for credit card information to purchase a KAC assessment(s). Your information is private and fully secure in transmission.
    3. Select an assessment.
  • Once you have purchased a group assessment, you will need to log out and back in to access any individual assessments for yourself.

    How do I purchase an additional group of KAC assessments?
    If you are a manager who wants to add KAC assessments to an existing group…
    1. Tell us who you are.
    Log on using your existing group account ID and information.
    2. Purchase assessment(s).

  • Once you have logged in, you may add to your existing Group ID and purchase additional KAC assessments for your group at a discount. Use the Purchase Now button in Your KAC Account.
  • You will be asked for credit card information that is private and fully secure in transmission.
    3. Select an assessment.
  • Once you have purchased additional group assessments, you will need to log out and back in to access any individual assessments for yourself.

    How much does a group of KAC assessments cost?
    1-10 assessments are $29.95 each.
    11-50 assessments are $28.95 each.
    51-100 assessments are $27.95 each.
    101-250 assessments are $26.95 each.
    251-500 assessments are $25.95 each.

    No. There is no limit to the number of KAC assessments that can be purchased.

    What if our Group Manager contact changes?
    Should the Group Manager contact for your group assessments change, a designee of your company will need to contact Techincal Support at 1-877-424-6357 to have the Group Manager information updated. This will ensure that the contact information, such as the e-mail address that group reports are sent to, is correct.

    Are plug-ins or downloads required to take a KAC assessment?
    The only download required is Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is free. Your computer must also be able to accept cookies.

    What are cookies and why do I need them?
    A cookie is a small text file containing a unique identification number that is transferred from a Web site to the hard drive of your computer. This unique number identifies your Web browser—but not you—to APA computers whenever you visit APA Web sites. A cookie will not provide personally identifiable information about you, such as your name and address. The use of cookies is now an industry standard, and cookies are currently used on most major Web sites.

    Most Web browsers are initially set up to accept cookies. If you prefer, you can reset your browser to notify you when you have received a cookie. You can also set your browser to refuse to accept cookies altogether. While APA does not require you to use cookies, keep in mind that certain services will not function properly if you set your browser to refuse all cookies.

    To help serve you better, APA generally uses cookies to identify return visitors. Cookies let us remember your Web browser so we can provide personalized member and customer services.

    How long does it take to complete an assessment?
    You may take up to one-hour or less to complete each assessment.

    Each KAC assessment is unique and will contain 50 questions.

    Yes. You must complete an assessment in one sitting. Consider reviewing the tutorial for hints to help you avoid interruptions.

    What happens if my computer crashes while I am taking a KAC assessment?
    If your computer crashes while taking an assessment, you will need to call technical support at 1-877-424-6357 for a qualified technician to assist you.

    Do I need anything to take a KAC assessment?
    You should have a calculator and some scratch paper for computing answers. Some questions will require the use of Adobe Acrobat Reader software (version 5.0 or greater) to view documents that may be needed to answer KAC assessment questions. Adobe Acrobat Reader is free and can be downloaded at < http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html>

    Can I bookmark my assessment and come back to that same place in the KAC assessment later?
    No. Once an assessment is started, it must be completed in that same session.

    Does the KAC time-out when there is no activity on an assessment?
    The KAC is a timed assessment. While the KAC will not time-out due to inactivity the assessment will end at the end of the 60-minute period. You will receive a score based on correct answers. Questions not answered are considered answered incorrectly when your assessment is scored.

    Can I navigate back to a previous question to change my response before submitting my final assessment answers?
    Yes, you can navigate to previous questions and change answers before submitting the assessment for scoring.

    Can I skip a question?
    Yes, you can skip an assessment question by clicking the Next button and not answering the question. The KAC View All Questions page will show the questions that are unanswered or have been Marked for Review.

    Can KAC results be anonymous?
    The results for a KAC assessment purchased and taken by an individual are made available only to the individual taking the KAC and anyone he/she designates to receive the results. The results for a KAC assessment purchased for a group by a group manager will be sent to both the manager purchasing for the group and the individual who took the assessment.

    Is the KAC assessment timed?
    Yes, you have 60-minutes to take a KAC assessment.

    How will I know how much time I have left?
    The KAC has a timer. If you decide to hide the timer during the assessment, the KAC will remind you when you have about 15-minutes left to complete the assessment.

    What are the computer system requirements for taking a KAC?
    To take a KAC you must have the following minimum system requirements:

  • Windows 95 or greater; Apple Macintosh OS 9.0 or greater; Internet Explorer 5.5 or greater; Netscape 6.0 or greater.
  • Windows AOL users: It is recommended that you use one of the browsers listed above and not the AOL browser.
  • Macintosh AOL users: It is required that you use one of the browsers listed above and not the AOL browser.

    Recertification
    What are recertification credit hours?
    APA offers two certifications to payroll professionals: Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) and Certified Payroll Professional (CPP). To maintain these certifications through continuing education, the individual is responsible for obtaining a certain number of recertification credit hours (RCHs) as detailed within the certification guidelines.

    Yes, one recertification credit hour is earned by taking a KAC assessment and scoring 80% or higher.

    KAC Results
    How long do I have to access my KAC results?
    You have 180 days to view the results of the most recent KAC assessment you took. Please note that the recommendations are refreshed every time someone accesses them.

    Must I always use the same computer to access KAC assessments and results?
    No. KAC assessments and results can be viewed from any computer that has Internet access and meets the minimum system requirements.

    The results for a KAC assessment purchased for a group by a group manager will be sent to both the purchasing manager and individual who took the assessment. The results for a KAC assessment purchased and taken by an individual are made available only to the individual taking the KAC and anyone he/she designates to receive the results.

    KAC questions are selected from a continuously growing bank of questions that are generated by a team of Certified Payroll Professionals and Fundamental Payroll Certification professionals.

    Will I be able to see the answers to the KAC?
    No, the answers to KAC questions will not be provided at any time. By providing answers for each individual question, a KAC user could potentially study to the questions and answers. The end result would not be a true assessment of a KAC user’s skills and knowledge.

    How much does a KAC cost?
    A KAC assessment costs $29.95 for the first 1-10 purchased at the same time. Discounts are applied to both groups and individuals dependent upon the quantity purchased.
